Pierre SchapiraPierre Schapira has been a socialist town councilor of Paris since 1995 and Deputy Mayor of Paris in charge of International Relations, European and Francophone Affairs since 2001. He studied dentistry and joined the French Socialist Party (Parti Socialiste, PS) in the 1970s. As President of the National Commission for the financial control of the PS from 1997 to 2005, Pierre Schapira was also responsible for applications to the First Secretary and for relations with Israel within the International Secretariat of the PS. From 1989 to 2004 he was a Member of the French Economic and Social Council and its Vice-President from 1999 to 2004. Until 2004, Pierre Schapira was the council's representative to the National Commission on Information and Freedoms (CNIL). After being appointed adviser in the office of Lionel Jospin in the Ministry of Education (1988-1992), he was part of his campaign team during the presidential elections of 1995 and 2002. From 2004 to 2009 Pierre Schapira was a Member of the European Parliament for the constituency Ile-de-France.
