Jürgen WiemannDr. Jürgen Wiemann was the deputy managing director of the German Development Institute / Deutsches Institut für Entwicklungspolitik (DIE) until the end of 2008; he now leads the programme "Development Cooperation and the World Trade System" of the German Association for Technical Cooperation (GTZ). After his studies of sociology, political science and economics in Hamburg, Marburg and Berlin he completed the 9th postgraduate training course in Development Policy at the German Development Institute (1973-1974), at the end of which he joined the German Development Institute as a research fellow. In 1983 Jürgen Wiemann completed his doctorate at the Free University of Berlin with a dissertation on the Agreement on Textiles and Clothing. After heading the European Integration, Trade and Development Policies department of the DIE from 1989 until 2000, Jürgen Wiemann was Deputy Director of the DIE from 2000 until 2008. Outside of the German Development Institute he worked for the Federal Ministry for Economic Co-operation and Development in 1977 and has been Vice-President of the European Association of Development Institutes (EADI) since 1999. His working fields include trade and development policy, the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT), the accession of developing countries into the World Trade Organisation (WTO) and the development policy of the German federal states, the city councils and the municipalities.
