Bärbel Dieckmann is Lord Mayor of the Federal city of Bonn and member of the SPD presidium. She studied philosophy, history and social sciences at the University of Bonn from 1967 until 1972 and completed her degree course by passing the Examination for Teacher Education at the Secondary Level in the subjects of History and Social Sciences. She joined the SPD in the same year. From 1974 until 1983 Bärbel Dieckmann worked as a grammar school teacher in Cologne and Bonn and also as a senior teacher at the Ernst-Moritz-Arndt grammar school in the position of director of studies. She was elected Lord Mayor of Bonn for the first time in 1994 and has assumed full time administrative responsibility for the city since 1995. Bärbel Dieckmann was vice federal chairwoman of the SPD from 2005 until 2007 and is a member of the Federal and the Federal State Board of the Social Democratic Association for Local Politics. She was initially President, subsequently Vice-President and additionally Executive President of the German Section of the Council of European Minicipalities and Regions from 1999 until 2007. She has been President of the World Mayors Council on Climate Change since 2005 and was elected voluntary chairwoman of Welthungerhilfe (German Agro Action) in November 2008.
