Astrid_PrangeAstrid Prange de Oliveira reports on travel, business, religion and world politics for the German newspaper Rheinischer Merkur. She studied history and Romance studies in Graz, Freiburg and Fairfax, Virginia. From 1989 to 1997 she was South America correspondent for the Berlin-based newspaper "tageszeitung" (taz). After returning to Germany, she worked in the news department of Evangelischer Pressedienst (epd), a church-affiliated news agency in Frankfurt am Main. She received the Lorenzo Natali Prize for human rights awarded by the European Commission in 1999 for her report about Germany's first asylum applicant, who fled Guinea to avoid circumcision, which appeared in taz and Deutsches Allgemeines Sonntagsblatt. In 2003 she was awarded the Developmet Policy Media Prize of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development for her coverage of environmentally sustainable resource use in the Brazilian Amazon region that appeared in Rheinischer Merkur.
